Women Writing for (a) Change offers writing classes for women
writers in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere. We value creativity, courage, and compassion, and seek to create a community in which each woman is free to find her own words and speak in her own voice.
|
|
Unlike traditional or academic writing classes, Women Writing for (a) Change classes include no syllabi, no textbooks, and no assignments. Women are given prompts to inspire writing and the opportunity to share their words and receive thoughtful, nurturing feedback. Once a semester, the class holds a public read-around when women friends are invited to come and hear students read their work (as with all sharing, it is always honorable for a student to pass). Classes are meant to be a time away from the bustle of life when attention can be turned to writing and reflection, and are conducted in a meditative circle, warmed with cups of herbal tea.
Upcoming Events:
The spring semester is in full swing. On Thursday, April 10th, the class will hold a public read-around open to any interested women. Each class participant will have a chance to read a piece she's written this semester, and afterward there will be wine and snacks. The readings will begin at 7 p.m. and be finished by 8. Please contact Kit for directions.
Kit will be presenting " Taking Your Writing Deeper" as part of the Kentucky Women's Book Festival on February 16th at UofL. This is a free day of lectures and workshops and is open to the public. For more information, visit: www.kwbf.info/
A free sample class will be offered on Saturday, March 1st, from 10 a.m. to noon. The sample class runs just like a usual writing class, and is an opportunity for women to see if the class is for them. Former and current students who want to touch back in are always welcome, too. Contact Kit to register for the sample class.
Two Saturday workshops will be offered in March and April. Although both will be facilitated in the Women Writing for (a) Change tradition of respect and encouragement, there will be more of a craft focus than in the semester or summer classes. Each workshop will includes an examination of examples as well as lots of time for writing and sharing. Each class meets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a break from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch, which participants can find at the Summit shopping center next door. Each workshop costs $35. Contact Kit to register.
On Saturday, March 29th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be "Exotic Poetry Forms." This fun, experimental workshop will take participants beyond sonnets and haiku to more exotic (but not necessarily more difficult) poetry forms. The idea is to see how using a format can help you grow a poem, rather than trying to twist a poem to conform to a format. Each participant will receive a handbook of poetry formats.
On Saturday, April from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will be "The Art of Description." Kit originally presented this workshop at the Women's Writing Center in Bloomington, and the participants enjoyed it so much that they asked her to create a second workshop on the same topic. This day-long workshop is the result. Because description is, on a practical level, writing itself, leaning how to describe anything means being able to write about anything. With that in mind, the workshop will focus on how to describe people, places, things, emotions, ideas, and the passage of time. Each participant will receive a 25-page handbook.
